Coming clean with Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine
Y’all remember when I was talking about all of my dirty carpet horror stories? The cracked eggs, nail polish, puke, etc.? We only have carpeting in the bedrooms, thank goodness, because when we installed it four years ago, I was smart enough not to put it in the living room, hallway, entry way, and dining room. Even still, dirt gets tracked in, little ones sneak food into their rooms, markers get left on the floor after drawing, it’s just a constant battle to keep the carpets clean.
Well today, I’m coming clean. My carpets were gross y’all. I mean, really. freaking. gross. Did they look that bad? Meh, they looked like they had been walked on for four years, and had some spots and stains. But I didn’t realize how really, really dirty they were until we had the opportunity to clean them with the Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine. One of their reps Tanya got ahold of me and asked if we’d like to try out one of their machines, and of course I said yes. I mean, hello, I have six kids and carpet, lol!
The first thing I noticed when she dropped the Bissell Big Green off was that is was so compact! It literally just folds right up, and weighs so little, it’s easy to move around. Which is great for me because I’m kind of a wuss, lol. It’s super easy to set up, you just pour a cap of cleaner into the reservoir and then fill it up with hot water the rest of the way. The machine doesn’t actually heat the water itself, so using hot water is pretty important.
Using the Big Green to clean is pretty simple, you squeeze the button to release cleaner as you move the machine back and forth across the carpet, then release and go over it again to scrub the carpet and suck up all the water. You’ll probably want to go over your floor a few times to get up as much water as possible. It’s light and rolls easy enough that I was able to do it with one hand, which again is good because pushing and pulling a heavy machine would have totally screwed up my already crazy back.
Now I’m going to get to the coming clean part. Remember when I said my floor was dirty? I mean, I knew it wasn’t clean, we hadn’t steam cleaned in the four years that we’ve had the carpet. But we vacuum regularly and scrub up any spills right away, so I didn’t think it was THAT bad. Oh. My. God. When I went to dump out the water tank it was disgusting. I mean, totally and completely brown and nasty. I could not believe how much dirt the Big Green had pulled up out of my carpet! It was so bad that I put a picture up on Facebook right away talking about how gross out yet surprised I was, all at once. We had been lying on the floor all this time, playing around, folding clean laundry on it, and more!
Knowing how bad our carpets actually were, I am so glad we used the Bissell Big Green to clean our carpets when we did! I ended up going over them several more times, just to get them super, duper clean, and now I feel so much better about the kids playing around on the floor. I am definitely going to be renting a deep cleaning machine at least every six months from here on out, now that I see how much dirt was lurking in our carpets all this time. Thankfully, I can stop by Lowe’s Home Improvement (as well as many other retailers) and pick one up any day of the week, for just $24.99 instead of paying for an expensive cleaning service that I have to schedule to come out. They also offer another machine that is specifically for cleaning up pet stains, called Pawsitively Clean, which is available for rent at most PetSmart locations. (Although I *am* thinking about just buying one to have on hand because…kids. Check out some of those options below.)
I have to say as well, we had quite a few stains that I had just assumed were permanent and would never come out. Almost every single one came up after the first pass with the Big Green carpet cleaner. The only ones that didn’t were from mascara (yay for makeup play time!) and some really dark mud that was tracked in several years ago. They both lightened up significantly, but didn’t come out all the way. Next time I’m going to try pretreating them and see if that will take care of them completely. Even still, I was totally blown away by how much better our carpets looked after I was finished. I kind of expected them to look kinda yuck again a few days later once we walked all over them, you know sometimes the stains kind of show back up after a bit. Nope, they still look just as awesome as they did after I cleaned them, I am really truly impressed with how well the Big Green works!
When’s the last time your carpets were cleaned? Don’t worry, I won’t tell! 😉 If you’d like to find out more about Bissell and their Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine and how it compares to the other brands out there, be sure to check them out online.
If you’re thinking that a one-time rental just ain’t gonna cut it for your messy kiddos, you may want to just bypass that option completely and buy your own carpet cleaner. Amazon has several that have excellent ratings and are a little over $100. Here are a few top-rated ones to kick off your search:
This model is the #1 seller on Amazon and has almost 5000 reviews with a 4.5 star rating. That’s pretty impressive. It’s only 18 pounds which means it won’t be hard on your back or your arms, and comes with a free $60 bonus pack that includes extra tools, hose, cleaning solution and tool storage bag.
It’s pretty obvious by the name and look of this cleaner that it’s not for on house carpet cleaning. But if you are looking for a quick and easy option for spills, accidents, and the funk that happens to the fabric under your kid’s car seat, this is probably your best bet. It’s got a 22 foot cord so you can take it pretty much anywhere you need to in the house or garage. Bonus points!
Love the results from the Bissell Big Green Carpet Cleaner, but don’t want to deal with the hassle of renting and returning? (not that it’s really a hassle, more so that you have to put on pants) You can buy the real deal for yourself. It’s not cheap, but at under $400, it’s not that bad of a cost in the long run for a professional grade machine. I mean, think about how much you spent on your carpet!
Disclosure – My family was offered a complimentary rental in exchange for sharing our experience with the Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine. All opinions are, as always, my own! Oh, and if you decide to buy something from Amazon using one of the links above, I’ll get a small commission. Woohoo for wine money!
